Media Release by Scottish Golf Union
Strathmore’s Kirsty Brodie savoured a glorious title double and Cameron McAndrew from Linlithgow proved just champion as the Highland Spring Junior Masters Grand Final was played out on Sunday.
On a glorious autumn day at Gleneagles – host venue for the 2014 Ryder Cup – the nation’s talented young golfers enjoyed a round to savour in the final showpiece.
Played over the delightful Queen’s Course, 79 players teed up in Scotland’s largest national event for young golfers – supported by ClubGolf, the national junior programme, and the Scottish Golf Union and the Scottish Ladies’ Golfing Association.
After an hour delay due to the frost in Perthshire, some fine golf was played with a familiar face coming out on top in the girls’ event.
Brodie achieved back-to-back victories in the competition thanks to a superb total of 39 stableford points off her 10 handicap. The 12-year-old from the nearby Strathmore club has been making a name for herself having also won the Ladies Club Championship at her club this year.
Twelve months ago it was almost a Brodie family double in the tournament, with Kirsty’s brother Michael just pushed into the runners-up spot.
“I loved the atmosphere of Gleneagles and enjoyed the round thoroughly,” Kirsty said. “I’m thrilled with back-to-back wins.”Three of the girls were tied on 36 points, with Julia Smith (Murrayfield) claiming the runners-up spot, Eva O’Connor (Bothwell Castle) third and Andrea Walker (Falkirk) fourth.
The winner of the boys’ event was Linlithgow’s McAndrew, aged 15. Thanks to a fine score of 42 points off his 12 handicap, Cameron triumphed by two points from Samuel Yule (Ballater) and Michael Baber from Hopeman.
Developed through the ClubGolf programme since he was seven or eight years old, McAndrew’s triumph completes a brilliant year given he started the season off a 19 handicap.
“I loved the greens on The Queen's,” he said. “It’s a great feeling to win and I hope to pursue a career in golf.”

Scotland narrowly beaten by England
On the second day of the Home Internationals at Cork Scotland were on the verge of victory against the star-studded England team before they lost 5-4 after a nail-biting final hour's play.
"We were so near to pulling off a great win," said Scotland skipper Fiona Norris.
"I couldn't play Alyson McKechin whose left foot and heel are badly blistered. We might have won had she been fit but all credit to the girls who did play against England.
"There were some excellent individual victories. Kelsey MacDonald beat Georgia Hall, No 4 in the world, by one hole and Rachael Watton beat Curtis Cup player Holly Clyburn by 6 and 5.
"I had to play both our youngsters, Rachel Walker and Lauren Whyte, in the singles and they did their best." In fact, Scotland and England were tied at 3 1/2 pt apiece with only two games to finish - and in these games Lauren Whyte was all square against Amber Ratcliffe after 12 holes and Jane Turner was one up after 11 against Curtis Cup player Bronte Law.
Turner lost the 16th, 17th and 18th to go down by two holes to Law while Whyte had to settle for a square match after losing the last hole to a brilliant up and down from a bad lie off the green by Ratcliffe.
Wales beat Ireland 6-3 in the other match.

England win the Girls' Home Internationals
Scotland, beaten 5-4 by Ireland in their final game, finished last in the Girls Home Internationals table at Radyr GC, near Cardiff today.
England won the title and the Stroyan Cup for the fifth year in a row but it was much closer than usual. They beat Wales 5-4 after Wales, who had taken the foursomes 2-1, led 4-2 and needed one more victory in the singles to be champions for the first time since 1999.
But England won all of the last three ties for victory.
Ireland were runners-up and Wales placed third.
Scotland trailed 2-1 to Ireland after the foursomes - as they had done against Wales and England earlier in the week. They played well enough in the singles to share them 3-3.
If the Girls Internationals were decided on singles only then Scotland would be title contenders.
The Scots' singles winners against the Irish were Clara Young (North Berwick), Jess Meek (Carnoustie) and Rachel Walker (Dumfries and Co).
The North of England win the MIller Stirling Trophy
The North of England won the Miller Stirling Salver on an exciting last day at the Hirsel. They beat the South of England by 5 1/2 to 3 1/2 with "Anglo-Scot" Fiona Anderson gaining the vital winning point. North had beaten each of the other three teams over the three days.
South of England were second and won the Tony Moffat Quaich. Midlands took third place and Scotland were fourth.

Scotland lose to England in Girls Home Internationals
On the second day of the Girls' Home Internationals at Radyr GC near Cardiff
Scotland lost 5 1/2-3 1/2 to England, the defending champions, while Ireland and Wales played out an exciting 4 1/2-4 1/2 draw.
England have 1 1/2pt, Wales and Ireland 1pt apiece and the Scots only half-a-point.
On the last day tomorrow it's Scotland v Ireland and England v Wales.
The damage was done for the Scots when they lost all three morning foursomes to England.
Give the Scots credit for fighting back and actually "winning" the singles but not by a big enough margin to wipe out the 3-0 lunchtime deficit.
Scottish Vets lose to England South
Scotland's hopes of winning the title in the Veteran women's golf jamboree at The Hirsel GC disappeared with a second defeat in a row. They were beaten 6-3 by England South after a first-day 5-4 defeat by England North.
The Scots trailed by 2pt after the morning foursomes and never looked like making up the deficit in the singles.
England North beat England Midlands 6-3 in the day's other match.

Vets lose on first Day of Jamboree
Scotland made a disappointing start to the Veteran Ladies' jamboree at The Hirsel. They were beaten 5-4 by North of England after taking a 2-1 lead from the foursomes into the singles.
In the other match, England Midlands drew with England South 4 1/2-4 1/2
