Amalgamation News

At a meeting this evening the Scottish Golf Union’s shareholders, comprising the sixteen Area Associations, voted 10 to 6 against the amalgamation proposal. This means the proposal in its current format has not received the required level of support by their shareholders and therefore amalgamation cannot proceed at this stage

The Scottish Golf Union Board is disappointed with the outcome of the Areas’ vote. The Board believes that the vote is contrary to the wishes of the majority of clubs they represent, which saw 263 affiliated clubs (89.2%) approve the amalgamation proposal from the 295 clubs (51%) that formally responded with their views.

Report from SLGA website re EGM

The Scottish Ladies’ Golfing Association today (25 May) held an Extraordinary General Meeting with the sole purpose of considering the proposal for the organisation’s amalgamation with the Scottish Golf Union. This proposal has been widely consulted upon with the voting members of both the SLGA (Clubs and Counties) and the SGU (Areas).
The proposal was carried by a significant majority, with 93.03% of votes cast being in favour of its adoption. The amateur game’s key stakeholders, in particular major funders sportscotland and other commercial sponsors and partners, have also strongly supported the proposal. The SGU’s Extraordinary Meeting is to be held tomorrow night, and the amalgamation will proceed if the Areas cast 12 of their 16 votes in favour.
Shona Malcolm, the SLGA Chairman, said on the conclusion of the meeting:-
“The SLGA Board is delighted with the outcome of the members’ vote and would like to take the opportunity to thank all of those who participated during the lengthy and extensive consultation process. Throughout the process the SLGA members have demonstrated a commitment to the future development and governance of Scottish amateur golf, with no thought of self interest.
The SLGA is committed to progressing the amalgamation to its conclusion, while protecting the democratic principle of the clubs, the main funders of Scottish amateur golf, being the voting members”.

Pamela selected for two Scottish Teams in forthcoming events

Pamela Pretswell has been selected along with Louise Kenney and Kelsey MacDonald for the Scottish Team in the St Rule Trophy at St Andrews on 28-29 May and the Ladies British Open Amateur Championship at Royal Portrush from 7 to 11 June.

Pamela has now completed her University Degree and can concentrate on her golf. We wish her well.

Short Game Practice Sessions worthwhile

In spite of being almost blown away and being bombarded by hailstones, almost as big as our golf balls, the participants in the final group of the short game practice sessions found the session worthwhile and enjoyable.
Many thanks to Lesley MacKay for making it so. Over the four sessions 65 of our members participated and hopefully should we continue to practice should see our handicaps come down.

Pamela chosen for GB&I team

The two Scots - Pamela Pretswell and Kelsey MacDonald - named earlier today in the Great Britain side of five for the Astor Trophy international team event did not know of their selection until it was announced.
So you can imagine their reaction to the news that they would be playing against most of the best female amateurs in the world from New Zealand, South Africa, Canada and Australia.
PAMELA PRETSWELL said
"Delighted to be selected for the Astor Trophy team. It is such a great honour to play for Great Britain and Ireland.
"I loved every minute of playing in the Vagliano Trophy two years ago and the Curtis Cup last year, so I am very much looking forward to the event and trying to defend the title that was won by Britain in South Africa four years ago."
The Astor Trophy tournament which is a round-robin team-matchplay event will be hosted by Fairhaven Golf Club at Lytham St Annes, Lancashire from Wednesday to Sunday, June 15 to 19.
It promises to be a great event, not only for players such as Pamela and Kelsey but also spectators because the field is made up of the very best female amateurs in the world.
The two girls ranked No 1 and No 3 in the Women's World Amateur Rankings - Lydia Ko and Cecilia Cho - will be spearheading a New Zealand team which will start favourites to take the title.

Report by Colin Farquharson

Congratulations Pamela

The other members of the team are Amy Boulden, Wales, Holly Clyburn and Kelly Tidy, both England.
