Mhairi has baby boy

Congratulations to Mhairi McKay and her husband, Dave Smith, on the birth of their baby boy on Saturday evening. Angus Albert McKay Smith weighed 7lb 14oz and he and Mum are doing well. According to his Aunt Fiona (our County Champion) he is observing Scottish time. Unfortunately for his parents he lives in the USA.

Fiona Norris is Lanarkshire County Champion. She played well with birdies at the 4th, 9th and 10th holes and with 6 single putts in her last 6 holes to defeat Joanna Scott (Cathkin Braes) by 5 & 4.Joanna also played well throughout the championship. In the morning semi finals Joanna defeated Lesley Lloyd 2&1 while Fiona defeated defending champion Susan Wood 4&3.
In the Bronze Championship Final Caroline Smith (Strathaven) defeated Margaret Porteous (Drumpellier), who was playing in her first County competition, 5&3.

    Quarter Final Results

    In this afternoon's semi-finals Lesley Lloyd beat Pat Hutton 4&3; Joanna Scott beat Hilary Stuart 2&1;Susan Wood beat Allison Bell 5&3; Fiona Norris beat May Hughes by 1hole.
    In the semi-finals tomorrow Lesley will play Joanna and Susan will play Fiona.

    Some close games in 1st round of Championship

    The players in the first round of the championship this morning enjoyed better weather. The results were: P Hutton beat A Clark 5&4; L Lloyd beat L Lees 7&5; H Stuart beat C McCall 6&5; J Scott beat E Cuthill at 19th; A Bell beat R Wilson 3&2; S Wood beat A Devine 4&3; M Hughes beat J Paterson 1 hole; F Norris beat M Brodie 7&5.

    Pat is top qualifier in Championship


    Pat Hutton of Lanark was the leading qualifier in the LLCGA Championship at Drumpellier GC today with a round of 76. The CSS was 75 and the competition was reduction only. The 16 who qualified for the 1st Match Play round tomorrow are Pat Hutton,76; Fiona Norris,81,;Allison Bell,82; Elaine Cuthill,83; Hilary Stuart, 83; Liz Lees,84; May Hughes, 85; Angela Devine, 88; Carol McCall, 89; Ray Wilson, 93; Marion Brodie, 94; Anne Clark,96.
    The four qualifiers for the semi final of the Bronze Championship were: Caroline Smith, 97; Jean Glass ,99; Margaret Porteous, 101; Linda McLanachan ,103.

    Helen Holm Final Round at Royal Troon

    The Helen Holm Championship was won by Leone Maguire from Ireland with a 6 under par total of 219, with Kelsey Macdonald, Nairn Dunbar, in second place and Leone's sister Lisa in third.
    Pamela Pretswell ,who finished in 20th place , was very much in contention for a time, being 3 under par after 8 holes and only 2 shots behind the leader. Unfortunately she had some trouble on the back nine and finished on a four over 79 today and also four over for the championship.

  • Helen Holm Scottish Open Stroke Play Championship

    Pamela Pretswell has a level par score after the second day of the Helen Holm Championship over Troon Pottland. She had a 3 under par round of 72 following a 3 over par 78 yesterday. She lies in 10th place, 4 strokes behind the leader, Leona Maguire of Ireland. Play was suspended for a time due to thunder and lightning. Tomorrow's final round will be played over the Old Course, Troon. Unfortunately Elaine Cuthill, the only other Lanarkshire competitor missed the cut after rounds of 81 and 82.

    Scotland in Sixth Place in European Nations Cup

    Scotland's Clare Queen and Lynn Kenny lie in sixth place with a 69 in the European Nations Cup at Alicante, Spain. They lie 4 shots behind the leaders, Australia after today's opening round of fourballs. For full report see Kirkwood Golf.

    Winter Foursomes Winners decided

    The Final of the Winter Foursomes was played today over Cathkin Braes in far from winter weather. In a very close match which was decided by the last putt on the last green Jane Lees and May Hughes (both Cathkin Braes) defeated Dorothy McTaggart and Mary Turner ( also both Cathkin Braes ). Congratulations to the winners.

    West Vets Championship

    May Hughes, Janice Paterson and Pat Hutton have qualified for the Quarter Final round of the West Vets Championship at Renfrew Golf Club on Tuesday 5th May. As Janice and Pat are drawn against each other we are guaranteed at least one Lanarkshire member in the Semi Final. May will play Linda McDougall(Greenock).

    Scottish vets have good win over Irish Seniors

    The Scottish Veterans Association Select Team defeated the Irish Seniors Team by 71/2 to 41/2 after winning today's singles 5-3 in the match for the Mary McKenna Salver at Cruden Bay. May Hughes was narrowly beaten by one hole by Valerie Hassett.

    Scottish Vets lead Irish Seniors at Cruden Bay

    After day one the Scottish Veterans team ,which includes Lanarkshire Captain May Hughes, are leading the Irish Seniors by one point in the Mary McKenna Salver match by winning today's Foursomes by 2 1/2 to 1 1/2.

    Lorna Bennett & Fiona De Vries bt Sheena McElroy & Marilyn Henderson 3 and 2
    Heather Anderson & Mary Smith halved with Mary Madden & pauline Walsh
    May Hughes & Kathleen Sutherland lost to Valerie Hassett & Violet McBride 2 and 1.
    Jill harrison & Fiona Hunter bt Helen Jones & Mary McKenna 1 hole.

    Reminder of April closing dates for competition entries

    The closing date for entries to the Championship and Bronze Trophy is 17th April, entries to Jean Macintyre. Remember that in the Qualifying Round on Monday 27th April the Centenary Salver will be awarded for the best nett score and the Joan Norris Trophy for the best scratch score. You are welcome to compete in the qualifying round even if you are unable to play on Tueasday or Wednesday.
    The closing date for the West of Scotland Championship is 19th April. Entries to be sent to Isabel Crawford.
    24th April is the closing date for the Inter County Foursomes Qualifying Round on 4th May, entries to Jean Macintyre.
