Today the Senior and Junior Squads had their third winter coaching session with Lesley Mackay at Playsport. It was a cold day but as usual Lesley did not give the girls time to get cold. It was an action packed two hours and an enjoyable time was had by all.

Rachael moves up 20 places

Rachael Taylor moved up 20 places after a good round of 72 yesterday in the third round of the Portugese Open Amateur Championship. Unfortunately she missed the cut.

Rachael Taylor is this week competing in the Portugese Open Amateur Championship at Montado Golf Resort, Lisbon. After the second round she is tied 96 after rounds of 81 and 89.

She will need a very good round tomorrow if she is going to make the third-round cut to the leading 40.

The leader is Rebecca Roeller of Germany. Leona Maguire of Ireland is in sixth place.

Pamela is named in Curtis Cup Squad

The Ladies’ Golf Union International Selection Panel has today named a Great Britain and Ireland preliminary squad of 12 players for the 37th Curtis Cup match against the United States at The Nairn Golf Club from June 8 to 10, 2012.

They are:

The players, watched by team captain Tegwen Matthews and the LGU International Selection Panel, will take part in a three-day team trial over The Nairn Golf Club’s championship links from Friday to Sunday, March 23 to 25.

The countdown has started with a vengeance towards the June 8-10 staging of the 37th Curtis Cup encounter at The Nairn Golf Club, – a biennial, eight-a-side three-day match between the best female amateur golfers in Great Britain & Ireland and their counterparts from the United States. GB & I last won the trophy at Killarney, Ireland in 1996 but last summer’s Astor Trophy success at Fairhaven GC, Lancashire, where skipper Tegwen Matthews’ team of five beat New Zealand, Canada, Australia and South Africa to win the once-every-four-years tournament, has raised hopes that the tide may turn in this year’s Curtis Cup match at Nairn.

Congratulations to Clare Queen

After the final round of the LET Qualifying School At La Manga Clare Queen finished in joint 22nd place after a 4 over par 77 today and so she was well within the top 30 places that will earn LET membership in category 8a. Well done Clare.

Carly Booth finished tied for 29th place but was beaten for the last qualifying place in a six player play off. She will only have limited playing rights next year.

England’s Jodi Ewart won by two strokes on 11 under par.

Clare makes cut in LET Q School

Only Clare Queen and Carly Booth of the five Scots in the field beat the fourth-round cut in the Ladies European Tour Final Qualifying School at La Manga, Spain today.

Clare is now lying in joint 10th place with a 1 over par total of 289 after a 2 over par 75 on the South Course today. The top 30 at the end of tomorrow's round will gain playing rights on the 2012 LET circuit.

Carly Booth is T43 with a total of 296.

Unfortunately Pamela Pretswell missed the cut. She finished with a 2 over par 73 to rise to joint 70th along with Gemma Webster with a total of 302. Pamela was playing as an amateur.

Lynn Kenny finished tied 76th.. It is the first time she has lost her player's card since she gained LET membership some years ago.

England's Jodi Ewart is still leadingwith a total of 277.

After the third round of the European Ladies Qualifying School at La Manga Clare Queen lies in joint 6th position after a 3 over par 74 on the North Course today.

Pamela Pretswell after a 4 over par 77 on the South Course today is now T76 as is Gemma Webster.

Carly Booth is now T40 and Lynn Kenny T49.

England's Jodi Ewart who is still leading is now on -13 after a 6 under par 67 on the South Course today.

After tomorrow's round the leading 50 and ties will proceed to the final round.

Clare Queen is now in joint 7th place after a 3 under par 70 over the more difficult South Course. She had 4 birdies and 1 bogey at the 15th. She is now on 4 under, 3 strokes behind the leader, England's Jodi Ewart.

Unfortunately Pamela Pretswell had a 5 over par 76 on the North Course today to fall back to T79. She is 5 strokes outside the top 50 at present but there are two more rounds before the cut to 50 and ties.

Carly Booth is now T52, Lynn Kenny is T56 and Gemma Webster T65.

Jennifer Wiles and Joyce McGowan are also through to the next round

On Saturday Marcia Stirling and Anne Mungall defeated Moray Meechin and Gail Campbell.

The second round is now complete. The closing date for the next round is 19 February.

Ladies European Tour Final Qualifying started today at La Manga

Clare Queen made a very good start to the final qualifying lying tied 13th with a 1 under par 70 on the North Course, 4 shots behind the leader.

Pamela Pretswell also started well with a 3 over par 76 on the South Course leaving her tied 55 but only 1shot behind 39th place.

The other Scottish players in the Final Qualifying are Lynn Kenny who is T69, Carly Booth and Gemma Webster who are T80.

Congratulations to Clare and Pamela who are among 72 players who have graduated to the Final Stage of The European Ladies Qualifying School at La Manga.

Clare finished tied for 10th in group A after a final round 2 over par 75 on the South Course giving her a 5 over par total of 293.

Pamela finished tied 18th in group B after a 3 over par 74 on the North Course giving her an 8 over par final total of 296.

The cut in group A came at +11 while that in group B was at +12.

A 90-hole test now awaits 101 players who will play the Final Stage at La Manga Club in Cartagena, Murcia, Spain, from Sunday.

The field will play both the North and South Courses for the first four rounds with a cut to the leading 50 players and ties after 72 holes. The final round, which will determine exemption categories for the 2012 season, will then be played on the South course.

At stake is a place on The 2012 Ladies European Tour for the cream of the crop. The players will all be eyeing a place in the top 30 to secure eligibility for LET Membership in Category 8a.

After the final round, players who made the cut but finished in position 31 or below will be ranked according to score and will be eligible for LET Membership in Category 9b.

Players who fail to make the 72 hole cut will be eligible for Category 11a Membership of the Ladies European Tour for the 2012 season.

After three rounds of the European Ladies Qualifying School At La Manga Clare Queen is lying joint 10th in Group A after a two-over-par 73 in the third round at La Manga North. She is on three-over-par 218 - five shots off the pace.

Pamela Pretswell is joint 17th in Group B after a two-over-par 75 at the more difficult La Manga South course.

After tomorrow's fourth round the top 35 in each group will proceed to final qualifying.

Clare Qeen and Pamela Pretswell are playing in the Ladies European Tour Qualifying School's two-part programme at La Manga, Spain from January 8 to 19, Clare to retain her tour card and Pamela to gain her's for the first time. Pamela is keeping her options open by retaining her amateur status.

The prequalifying from 8-11 Jan consists of 72 holes. The Qualifying is over 90 holes from 15-19 Jan. There is a cut to the leading 50 and ties after four rounds. In the end the top 30 will gain playing rights for 2012.

May Hughes receives Honorary Membership of LLCGA

This is Lesley's speech on presenting the Honorary Membership.

May Hughes has been a member of LLCGA since 1979 and played for the County Team between 1983 and 2010. May was selected for this year’s team but decided it was time to hang up her red jersey.

During that time, especially in the 1980s and early 1990s, Lanarkshire were a very successful team and May was part of a winning team that qualified for and won the Scottish County Finals on 4 occasions.

May was County Champion in 1993, 2003 & 2004 and runner-up on 3 other occasions. As well as being a very successful golfer, May served on Committee from 1996-99 and she was County Captain in 2008 and 2009 in our Centenary Year.

Since becoming eligible for Seniors and Vets golf May has twice been West of Scotland Vets Champion in 2008 and 2010, was runner up in the Scottish Vets Championship in 2010, represented the Scottish Vets Team on five occasions and this year represented Scotland in the Senior Home International Matches.

May, in recognition of your outstanding contribution and commitment to Lanarkshire Ladies County Golf Association over many years I would ask you to accept Honorary membership of our Association.

Many thanks Lesley for your kind words

Listening to the dates from 1979 it’s quite scary to think that 32 years seem to have passed by in a flash.

I was very fortunate to be part of a very successful Lanarkshire Team in the 1980’s and 90’s when appearances at the County Finals was a regular occurrence.

My initiation to foursomes at this time was under the watchful eye of our president Ann Prentice and my lasting memory of that training was that losing a match was not an option.

The decision taken to retire from Inter County matches was not taken lightly. It was always a privilege to pull on a bright red jersey and play for Lanarkshire. The experience gained and the friendships made over three decades will always be very special to me.

As I have now reached an age that I am eligible to participate in senior events, the competitive edge gained from playing County Team Golf has been invaluable.

To therefore receive an honorary membership of Lanarkshire for playing golf and having the opportunity to serve on committee and the privilege of being county captain in centenary year is indeed the icing on the cake.

I am proud to now be an honorary member of this great County and I will continue to offer support in any way I can in the years to come.

My thanks again to Lesley and the Lanarkshire committee for bestowing this honour.

Winner of Murcia Ladies Open to be decided by play off tomorrow

After both shooting 70 in the final round of the Murcia Ladies Open to finish at five under par 214, the defending champion Julie Tvede from Denmark and Spain’s Carlota Ciganda will resume play on Sunday morning. The two players played the par five 18th twice in the play-off, both recording birdies each time but were unable to continue due to darkness.

Heather MacRae (Gleneagles) was the top Scot, finishing T9 on 223 with scores of 76, 70 and 77. She had a double bogey 6 at the 15th for the second successive day.

Pamela Pretswell finished one shot behind Heather but T17 was her final position after rounds of 73, 75 and 76. She had a birdie 3 at the 14th in the final round. The same hole cost her a double bogey 6 in the first round.This is acrditable performance in this, a professional competition and a good practice for the january's LET Qualifying School which is being played over the same course.

Play suspended in Murcia Ladies Open

The second round of the 54-hole Murcia Ladies Open over the South Course, La Manga will be completed early Saturday morning after electrical storms in the south-east region of Spain forced a suspension of play this afternoon.

Pamela is joint eighth after first round in Spain

Pamela Pretswell is competing in the Murcia Open at La Manga, Spain, which is a professional event. She is retaining her amateur status until she sees how she fares at the Ladies European Tour Qualifying School over the same course in early January.

Pamela is joint eighth in a field of 82 players, five shots behind the 21-year-old Spanish leader, Carlota Ciganda, a rookie pro from Pamplona, after the first round.

Pamela would have been at least two shots closer but for a double bogey 6 at the 14th. Pamela had a mid-round slump when she dropped four shots between the ninth and 15th but she had started well with birdies at the third and long fourth.

She also finished strongly with birdies at the 16th and long 18th to match the par of 73.

Rules Officials needed

The SLGA are seeking candidates to train as Rules Officials. They are looking for those who have already passed the SGU Rules Exam or people interested in sitting this exam. This involves a two day course with an exam at the end and which involves a cost. This would allow someone to officiate at club or county level and she may be asked to assist at Scottish events.

Those who have successfully passed the SGU exam, at the invitation of the SLGA, may be put forward to sit the more advanced R&A exam. The SLGA fund this exam.

Mhairi, an Honorary Member of LLCGA, who is a member of the LPGA tour was yesterday inducted into Stanford University Athletics Hall of Fame. The following is an extract from the Stanford University website.

What are some of your thoughts about being selected to Stanford's Athletic Hall Fame?

When the phone call came from the athletic department informing me of my selection for the Hall of Fame I remember just being completely stunned and taken aback. Such an honor I had given no thought to. Obviously I was aware of the great Stanford golfers already inducted, Mickey Wright, Tom Watson, Tiger Woods to name but a few; their stratospheric achievements have been an inspiration to me throughout my career. Following in their footsteps is very surreal, flattering and humbling.

Squads have first informal get together

10 Seniors and 14 juniors took part in our first informal get together of the winter season at playsport on Thursday evening.

Each team, which consisted of a senior and at least one junior, was given a practice sheet and a prize was awarded for the highest score. Well done to Susan wood, Erin Jonhston and Kirstin Brown who won this challenge in a sudden death play off.

There were additional prizes awarded for targets. It was extremely encouraging to see how many of the targets were hit by the juniors.

A great night was had by all and a big thank you is due to Lesley MacKay for setting the challenges for the evening.

Pamela is second in SLGA Order of Merit

The SLGA Order of Merit was won by Louise Kenney of Pitreavie, the Scottish Amateur Champion with 2375 points.

Pamela Pretswell who missed several events because of university commitments, still gained 1,800 points to finish second in what could be her final amateur season. She has entered the Ladies' European Tour qualifying school early next year.

Rachael Taylor finished 10th and Susan Wood 13th. Lesley Lloyd , Jenny Potter, Elaine Cuthill and Angela Devine in spite of only playing in 2 counting competitions also featured on the list, Lesley at 44th, Jenny at 59th, Elaine at 71 and Angela at 76.

Pamela now ranked world number 29

Pamela Pretswell moved up three places to No 29 in the Women's World Amateur Golf Rankings this midweek on the strength of her finishing third in rain-shortened French women's amateur international tournament at Morfontaine at the weekend.

This means the Bothwell Castle GC member will have to play in the 72-hole pre-qualifying event at the Ladies European Tour School at La Manga, Spain from January 8 to 11.

Had she been ranked in the leading 25 at the LET's closing date for entries, she would have been exempt from pre-qualifying and gone straight through to the Final Q School field for the 90-hole event from January 15 to 19.

Lanarkshire Girls play in Junior Masters

Three Lanarkshire girls, Heather Neilson, Alexandra Duffy and Emily Glencorse played in the Highland Spring Junior Masters on a wet and windy and sometimes sunny day at the Queens Course, Gleneagles yesterday.

They qualified from regional events for this Under-16 years, handicap-based Stableford points competition organised by the Scottish Golf Union, assisted by the Scottish Ladies Golfing Association and run in conjunction with clubgolf, Scotland's national junior golf development programme.

Pamela finishes third in French Championship

Pamela Pretswell had a 72 yesterday and was three shots off the pace after 3 rounds of the 72-hole event at Morfontaine Golf Club. She had rounds of 69 74 and 72

Pamela, the first-round pacemaker with a 69, was deprived, however, of the opportunity to regain the lead when the fourth and final round of the French international women's amateur golf championship at Morfontaine was cancelled because of heavy rain.

The championship for the Cecile de Rothschild Trophy was cut to three rounds and Pamela finished third on 215 (69-74-72), three shots behind the winner, Perrine Delacour from Paris, winner of the British girls open title two years ago. Perrine scored 73, 66 and 73 for a four-under-par 212.

Another French player, Fiona Puyo (72-72-70) finished second on 214, one ahead of Pamela.

Rising English teenage star Charley Hull finished joint fourth on 217 with scores of 70, 74 and 73.

Sea mist forced the suspension of play just after 4pm on Day 2 of the Senior Women's Home Internationals at Tramore Golf Club in southeast Ireland.

Play will restart at 9.15am on Thursday from the positions the players are at in their singles matches.

The foursomes will be dropped from the Day 3 programme which will be truncated to seven singles ties between England v Ireland and Wales v Scotland.

On the 17th and 18th September 44 girls from all over Scotland travelled to St Andrews to compete in The University of St Andrews schoolgirls' golf Tournament 2011.

The competition comprised of a round on the Strathtyrum course and a round on the Jubilee course. In addition a university tour and short presentation about the Ladies Golf Club were given.

Alexandra Duffy won the S5/S6 Stableford Competition with 88points.

Heather Neilson was third with 74 points.

Emily Glencorse competed in the S3/S4 competition.

Midlothian, title-winners in 2007 but pipped on a countback in 2009 and 2010 for the Scottish women's county championship, finally prevailed on a three-way countback in the closest finish for years to the tournament hosted by Dumfries and County Golf Club.

Midlothian, Ayrshire and Dumfries-shire all finished with two wins and one defeat while Perth and Kinross lost all three of their matches.

Rain halted play on the second day of the Scottish women's county golf championship finals at Dumfries and County Golf Club today (Saturday).

Title-holders Scotland's hopes of retaining the Women's Home Internationals title at Hillside Golf Club took a potentially fatal blow on another very windy and latterly very wet day at the Lancashire links.The Scots led Ireland by 2 points after the morning foursomes but the Irish took the singles by 3 points to finish as 5-4 winners.
Meanwhile, England, trailing 2-1 to Wales after the morning foursomes, won five of the six singles to win the match 6-3.
Scotland play England and Ireland play Wales on Day 2
Scotland looked set for a comfortable start to the defence of the title they won at Whitchurch (Cardiff) 12 months ago when Pamela Pretswell beat Lisa Maguire 5 and 4 to stretch the Scots' lunchtime lead to 3.5 to 0.5.
But it was a false dawn. Scotland did not win another singles tie.
Louise Coffey started the swing Ireland's way when she beat Louise Kenney 4 and 3,
Gillian O'Leary had a very good 3 and 1 win over Kelsey MacDonald and Charlene Reid chalked up a 5 and 4 win over former Scottish champion Megan Briggs.
That left the overall scoreline level at 3.5pt each with two matches to finish.
Ireland's Paula Grant, two down to Monifieth debutante Rebecca Wilson at the turn, fought back to gain a square match by winning the last hole.
And Ireland got the clinching victory point in the last match to finish with Emma O'Driscoll winning the 16th and 17th and halving the last for a come-from-behind one hole victory over Craigielaw's Jane Turner.
England came storming back in the singles against Wales, quickly making up their one-point deficit from the singles, winning five of the six afternoon ties.
A rampant England is bad news for Scotland's second match particularly after the morale blow they must have suffered with their collapse in the singles.

Marsha Hull,Strathaven, won the Silver division of the SLGA Grand Medal Final at a sunny Crieff Golf Club today with a net 5 under par 69 which was 7 under the CSS of 76. Lorna Fury, Thornton, was second with a net 75 and Michelle Molloy, Cathkin Braes was third. All three qualified from the West Regional Qualifier at East Kilbride.
The winner of the Bronze Division was Leanne Wilson of Kelso ladies.Over 400 players started the season-long competition at club/area level and 25 qualifiers contested the Final at Crieff where the par was 74 and the CSS 76

I would appreciate if you could remind your juniors about the SLGA Adult Girl Foursomes event which is to be played at Auchterarder on Sunday 25 September. This is often a great opportunity for the girls to get a first taster of competitive golf outwith their own County.

Details:

This competition is an 18 hole foursomes stableford competition. It is open to junior girls (under 18 on 1/1/2011), partnered with a lady or gentleman with a CONGU handicap. There are separate sections for the various handicap categories and pairings with a junior without a CONGU handicap will also be in a separate section.

This is a fun competition for girls of all abilities, for example last year we had girls of all abilities competing all the way through from international level to girls without handicaps.

Catriona Matthews is the winner of the Aberdeen Ladies Scottish Open at Archerfield Links after a 6 under par round today, giving her a 15 under par total of 201 .
Mhairi McKay finished in joint 9th place after a 2 under par round of 70 today giving her a 1 under par total of 215.
Clare Queen had a 4 over par round of 76 today , finishing in 24th place with a 3 over par total of 219.

Catriona Matthews leads in Scottish Open

A superb course-record seven under par 65 saw Catriona Matthew take a four shot lead after the second round of the Aberdeen Ladies Scottish Open presented by EventScotland on Friday.

Archerfield Links Honorary Member Matthew was at nine under par overall thanks to a flawless round with seven birdies on the Fidra championship course.

Clare Queen had a level par round to remain at 1 under par and to give her a share of 8th place.
Mhairi McKay is on 1 over par after a 1 under par round today.

Leona Maguire wins British Open Championship

Leona Maguire of Sieve Russell in Ireland won the British Strokeplay Championship after a second successive round of 69 in the final round. Pamela Pretswell and Rachael Taylor finished in a very creditable share of 5th place.

After the second round of the British Amateur Strokeplay Championship at Royal Ashdown Forest Rachael Taylor is in joint 8th place after a round of 79 and is only 3 shots behind the leader, Charlotte Thomas of Singapore.
Pamela Pretswell is a further shot back after a second successive 4 over par 76. The SS is 76.
The Championship concludes after 2 rounds tomorrow.

Rachael in joint lead in British

Rachael Taylor shares the lead with Alyson McKechin of Renfrewshire after round 1 of the British Amateur Stroke play Championship at Royal Ashdown Forest after scoring a level par 72. Well done Rachael.
Pamela Pretswell had a 4 over par 76.
Bogeys, double bogeys and higher were common. Birdies were rare and eagles an endangered species.
Royal Ashdown Forest has been used by the R&A as an Open championship qualifying venue – and today the competitors in this LGU tournament could see why for themselves.

The first round of the Scottish Girls and Boys Under 14's Championship at Aberdour has been cancelled today (because of very heavy rain and flooding).
The Championship will now be held over 18 holes tomorrow (Friday, August 12). Tee times for tomorrow will be as per the Round 2 (Friday) tee-times on the draw. Competitors should register tomorrow 30 minutes before their tee-time.

The following girls from Lanarkshire will be competing in the Scottish Boys and Girls under 14 Championship , sponsored by Loretto School, at Aberdour Golf Club tomorrow and Friday: Kirsten Brown, Ellie Bryce, Emily Glencorse, Molly Richmond and Katie Scott.

Hopefully the wet weather will not disrupt the Championship or make playing conditions too unpleasant.

Pamela loses at 19th

Pamela Pretswell qualified in 7th place for the matchplay round at the US Women's Amateur Championship at Rhode Island GC.

Pamela was unfortunate to be defeated at the 19th hole by Stephanie Kim from Arizona. The only other Scottish competitor, Sally Watson, who qualified in 55th place was also defeated in the first round.

University of St Andrews School Girls Golf Tournament 2011

The Ladies Golf Club, alongside the University of St Andrews, is hosting the School Girls Golf Competition 2011 on 17th and 18th September. The competition is aimed at Scottish school girls in S3,S4, S5 and S6 and will be a stableford competition. The players will also be given the opportunity to attend a University tour and information sessions on the Saturday afternoon.

The entry fee for the competition has been covered by the Ladies Golf Club, the University and by the Athletic Union. This means that the girls will get the opportunity to play both the Jubilee and the Strathtyrum Courses free of charge and it will also be a good opportunity for them to visit St Andrews and the University. We're hoping that the weekend will be informative and fun for all involved.

The University office will shortly be distributing posters to local schools and emailing those schools further afield.

72 ladies competed in the West area SLGA Medal Finals at East Kilbride Golf Club today. The course which was in very good condition was much admired as was the new clubhouse which opened last Tuesday.
Michelle Molloy(Cathkin Braes) and Marsha Hull(Strathaven) were among the qualifiers for the SLGA Grand Medal Final at Crief on 4 September.

Tri Am Results

The Tri Am was played today at a sunny Cambuslang Golf Club . The course was in very good condition and as always the food was good . As well as being an enjoyable competition the sum of £243 was raised for the funds.

In the Ricoh Women's British Championship at Carnoustie Pamela Pretswell was 2 under after 6 and level par after 14 but bogied the 15th and 16th , birdied the 17th but bogied the 18th to finish on a 2 over par 74 and to sadly miss the cut by 1 stroke.

Catriona Mathews(-5) , Janice Moodie(-2) and Kylie Walker(par) did make the cut.
